MarketMuse Alternatives: Content Planning Without the Demo Call
MarketMuse plans content well, but its paid plans now go through a demo and it doesn't write for you. Here are the alternatives with public prices, what each one plans or writes, and when MarketMuse is still the better pick.

What Are the Best MarketMuse Alternatives?
The best MarketMuse alternatives are Frase, Surfer, Clearscope and Inbounder, and each replaces a different part of what MarketMuse does. Frase is the closest match for research plus writing. Surfer pairs planning with strong page optimization. Clearscope is the simplest for query research and optimizing. Inbounder plans a pillar-first cluster from your URL for free and then writes it.
Here's the short list, by who each fits:
- Frase: teams that want opportunities, briefs, drafts and publishing in one tool. From $39/mo billed yearly, 7-day free trial.
- Surfer SEO: editors who want topic planning plus the best-known page optimizer. From $49/mo billed yearly; Topical Map works best with Search Console data.
- Clearscope: content teams that want query research and simple optimization. From $129/mo, 14-day free trial.
- Inbounder (our product): founders who want the plan and the written, linked articles. Planning is free; 3 articles free, then from $39/mo billed yearly.
All four list their prices publicly. MarketMuse's pricing page, checked October 28, 2026, shows a free plan and routes the paid plans (Optimize, Research and Strategy) to a demo.
Key Takeaways
- MarketMuse is a planner. Its own FAQ says it does not write content for customers, though its Optimize app has a generative AI component.
- Paid MarketMuse plans have no listed price on its pricing page as of October 28, 2026. You book a demo.
- MarketMuse has been part of Siteimprove since October 31, 2024. Customer terms moved to Siteimprove in June 2026.
- If you want planning plus drafts, Frase and Inbounder both start at $39/mo billed yearly.
- If you run a large, established site and need inventory-level analysis, MarketMuse may still be the best tool for that job.
Why People Look for a MarketMuse Alternative
Three things push teams to look elsewhere: price, a long path from plan to published page, and uncertainty after the acquisition.
Price you can't see. MarketMuse's pricing page lists what each plan includes, such as tracked topics, content briefs and strategy documents, but not what the paid plans cost. Each one says "Book a demo." For a founder or small team, a sales call before you know the price is a real barrier.
A plan isn't a page. MarketMuse tells you what to write and how much. Its own FAQ answers "Will you write content for me?" with: its Optimize application has a generative AI component, "but we do not write content for our customers." So after the plan, you still need writers or another tool to produce the pages, link them and publish them. If you're weighing AI writers for that step, see Jasper AI alternatives.
New ownership. Siteimprove announced it would acquire MarketMuse on October 8, 2024, and completed the deal on October 31, 2024. MarketMuse's current terms of service, effective June 30, 2026, are now issued by Siteimprove for subscriptions "formerly provided by MarketMuse." That doesn't mean the product is getting worse. It does mean packaging and pricing may keep shifting.
MarketMuse Alternatives Compared
This table uses each vendor's public pages, checked October 28, 2026. It isn't a hands-on test.
| Tool | Plans content? | Writes content? | Starting price | Where MarketMuse is better |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frase | Yes: a scored feed of opportunities from Search Console, competitor gaps and decay; topic clusters | Yes: briefs and drafts, published to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix | Starter $39/mo billed yearly ($49 monthly), 10 articles; 7-day free trial | Deeper site inventory and personalized difficulty |
| Surfer SEO | Yes: Topical Map from your Search Console keywords; Content Ideas & Coverage Gap on Pro | Yes: AI writing assistant in the editor | Discovery $49/mo billed yearly, 120 documents | Planning that doesn't need Search Console history |
| Clearscope | Partly: Query Discoveries for topic and keyword research | Partly: briefs and AI-generated outlines; your team writes | Essentials $129/mo; 14-day free trial | Topic authority scoring and content plans across your inventory |
| Inbounder | Yes: a pillar plus 8 to 12 supporting articles from your URL, free to plan | Yes: each article in your voice, linked to its pillar and siblings | Free for 3 articles, no card; then from $39/mo billed yearly, 10 articles | Content inventory, low-quality content flags and analyst-grade topic analysis |
| MarketMuse (for reference) | Yes: inventory, topic authority, content plans | No; generative AI helps in Optimize, but MarketMuse doesn't write for you | Free plan, 10 queries/mo; paid plans by demo | n/a |

The Alternatives, One by One
1. Frase: planning and writing in one tool
Frase is the closest single replacement if you want MarketMuse-style "what to do next" plus the writing. It pulls your search data, competitor gaps and decaying pages into one scored list, and each opportunity opens a brief in the editor. From there it drafts, scores for SEO and GEO, and publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix. Starter is $39/mo billed yearly for 1 seat, 1 site and 10 articles a month. It also tracks AI visibility, starting with ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter.
Good fit if: you have an established site with Search Console history and want one tool from plan to published page. Not a fit if: you need deep inventory-level topic authority analysis. That's still MarketMuse's strength.
2. Surfer SEO: planning plus page optimization
Surfer's Topical Map clusters the keywords in your Search Console account into a map of your domain and suggests neighboring clusters to cover. Pro ($182/mo billed yearly) adds Content Ideas & Coverage Gap, a cannibalization report, and 1-click internal linking. Surfer's Content Editor remains one of the strongest page optimizers available.
Good fit if: your site already has Search Console data and you want planning and optimization in one place. Not a fit if: your site is new. Surfer's docs say smaller or newer domains need more content before Topical Map works. Surfer SEO alternatives covers this in more depth.
3. Clearscope: simpler research and optimization
Clearscope's Query Discoveries tool helps you find topics and questions worth covering, including what people ask AI chatbots. Its Write product adds briefs and AI-generated outlines, and every plan tracks queries in ChatGPT and Gemini. Essentials is $129/mo with unlimited users.
Good fit if: you have writers and want a simpler tool than MarketMuse, with public pricing. Not a fit if: you want the full cluster planned or written for you.
4. Inbounder: a free plan, then the articles
Inbounder is our product, so weigh this one accordingly. Planning is where it overlaps with MarketMuse. You paste your site's URL, Inbounder builds an editable brand-voice profile, and it plans one pillar and 8 to 12 supporting articles grouped by search intent. Keyword research and cluster planning cost nothing, so you see the whole plan before you spend a credit.
The difference is what happens next. Each article Inbounder writes (1 credit) links to its pillar and closest siblings as it's written. You review every article. Drafts go to WordPress directly on paid plans, or to Webflow, Shopify, HubSpot or a custom CMS through Inbounder's MCP server and your AI agent. Search Console then shows impressions, clicks and position for every post in the cluster.
Good fit if: you're a founder or small team that wants the plan and the pages, at a price you can see. Not a fit if: you need inventory audits at MarketMuse's depth, low-quality content flags or personalized difficulty. Inbounder doesn't match MarketMuse there. The Inbounder vs MarketMuse comparison has more detail.
When MarketMuse Is Still the Right Choice
MarketMuse is still a strong pick for large sites with years of content. Its inventory analysis, topic authority, personalized difficulty and content plans are built for teams deciding what to update and what to create across hundreds or thousands of pages. If that's your job, and a demo-based price is fine for your budget, the alternatives above are lighter tools.
It's a weaker fit for a new or small site. With little content to analyze, the inventory features have less to show, and you'll still need a way to write the pages.
What "Topical Authority" Planning Actually Needs
Whichever tool you pick, the plan only matters if it turns into connected pages. Topical authority is how much search engines and AI systems trust a site on a subject, and you build it by covering a topic from several angles and linking those pages together.
A good plan has three parts: one pillar page on the main topic, supporting pages that each answer one specific question, and links from every support up to the pillar and across to close siblings. Our guides on how to build topical authority and how to create a topical map walk through it. If you also want those pages quoted in AI answers, the answer engine optimization guide covers what changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to MarketMuse?
For planning plus writing in one tool, Frase is the closest match. For planning plus page optimization, Surfer. For simpler research and optimization, Clearscope. For a free cluster plan that then gets written and linked, Inbounder. MarketMuse is still the deepest on inventory analysis.
How much does MarketMuse cost?
MarketMuse's pricing page, checked October 28, 2026, shows a free plan with 10 queries a month and three paid plans (Optimize, Research and Strategy) with no listed price. You book a demo to get a quote.
Does MarketMuse write content?
Not for you. MarketMuse's FAQ says its Optimize application has a generative AI component to help you create content faster, but it does not write content for customers. Its focus is telling you what to write and how much.
Is MarketMuse owned by Siteimprove?
Yes. Siteimprove announced the acquisition on October 8, 2024 and completed it on October 31, 2024. MarketMuse's terms of service, effective June 30, 2026, are now issued by Siteimprove.
Is there a free MarketMuse alternative?
MarketMuse itself has a free plan with 10 queries a month. Among alternatives, Inbounder lets you plan a full cluster for free and write 3 articles with no card. Frase and Clearscope offer free trials rather than free plans.
Is MarketMuse good for small sites?
It can be, but much of its value comes from analyzing an existing content inventory. A new or small site has less for it to analyze, and you'll still need a separate way to write and publish the pages it recommends.
