Surfer SEO vs Clearscope (and When You Need Neither)
Surfer and Clearscope are both strong page optimizers. Here's how they differ on price, planning, writing and AI-answer tracking, and when the better buy is neither.

Surfer SEO vs Clearscope: Which Should You Choose?
Surfer SEO vs Clearscope comes down to team size and budget. Pick Surfer if you want the lower entry price for one person, planning from your Search Console data, and more features as you move up plans. Pick Clearscope if you want one simple plan with unlimited users, AI-answer tracking on every plan, and a grade that follows writers into Google Docs, Word and WordPress. Pick neither if your real problem is that the pages never get written.
The verdict, by who each fits:
- Solo founder or small budget: Surfer. Discovery is $49/mo billed yearly, against Clearscope's $129/mo.
- Content team with several writers: Clearscope. Every plan has unlimited users.
- You want AI-answer tracking from the start: Clearscope includes ChatGPT and Gemini query tracking on every plan. Surfer adds it from Standard ($99/mo billed yearly).
- No one is writing the pages: neither. An optimizer grades pages; it doesn't plan the cluster or write it. See the third option below.
Key Takeaways
- Both tools grade a draft against the pages that rank today and help you fill the gaps.
- Surfer starts lower ($49 vs $129 a month) and adds AI-answer tracking on Standard and internal linking and custom voices on Pro (checked Oct 30, 2026).
- Clearscope keeps it simpler: Essentials at $129/mo with unlimited users, 20 monthly Drafts and a 14-day free trial.
- Surfer's Topical Map builds from Search Console keywords, and its docs say newer domains need more content first.
- If you'd use either tool on pages that don't exist yet, the bottleneck is production, not grading.

Price: Surfer Starts Lower, Clearscope Stays Simpler
Surfer's Discovery plan is $49/mo billed yearly for 120 documents. Integrations and AI-answer tracking start on Standard ($99/mo billed yearly, 360 documents), and internal linking and custom voices sit on Pro ($182/mo billed yearly). Surfer also sells AI Search Analytics on its own at $82/mo billed yearly.
Clearscope has two listed plans. Essentials is $129/mo and Business is $399/mo, both with unlimited users and unlimited projects, plus add-ons for extra queries, pages and Drafts. Monthly plans have no minimum contract.
For one person, Surfer is cheaper. For a team of five writers, Clearscope's unlimited users can change the math; Surfer lists 1 seat on Discovery, 3 on Standard and 5 on Pro.
Grading and Writing
Both tools compare your draft against the pages that rank and show what's missing. Surfer gives a Content Score with a SERP Analyzer, and Surfy, its AI SEO assistant, comes with Discovery. Clearscope gives a grade from A++ to F, with a term map that also shows which terms Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude use in their answers. "Boost content grade" fills gaps in one click.
On drafting, Clearscope's Write product takes a direction and a tone and returns an outline, then a full draft that follows your brand guidelines. Surfer's custom voices are on Pro.
Either way, the tool grades or drafts one page at a time. Neither decides which ten pages belong together.
Planning: Topical Map vs Discover
Surfer's Topical Map fetches keywords from your Google Search Console data and clusters them. Surfer's help docs say smaller or newer domains need to build content before they can use it.
Clearscope's Discover starts from a topic or any URL and returns the questions people ask Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, with monthly searches and competition, then sends them to Track or Draft.
If your site is new, Discover has more to show you on day one. If you have Search Console history, Topical Map uses your own data.
AI-Answer Tracking
Clearscope tracks queries in ChatGPT and Gemini on every plan, and its Monitor product connects Search Console to flag pages that are slipping. Surfer's Discovery plan tracks 0 AI prompts; Standard tracks 25 weekly in ChatGPT, and Pro tracks 50 daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini.
Tracking shows whether you're mentioned. It doesn't make you mentioned. For a free way to check, see how to check if ChatGPT cites your site.
The Third Option: When You Need Neither
An optimizer assumes the pages exist or someone is about to write them. If your backlog is topics you never started, a better grade won't clear it. That's the job Inbounder is built for, and it's our product, so weigh this accordingly.
You paste your site's URL, and Inbounder builds an editable brand-voice profile. It plans one pillar and 8 to 12 supporting articles, free, before you spend a credit. Each article it writes links to its pillar and closest siblings as it's written. You review every article, and paid plans send drafts to WordPress in one click. It starts free for 3 articles with no card, then from $39/mo billed yearly for 10 articles a month.
What Inbounder doesn't do: it doesn't sell a content score as the goal, and it doesn't track AI-answer mentions. If those matter most, pick Surfer or Clearscope. The Inbounder vs Surfer and Inbounder vs Clearscope comparisons go feature by feature, and the Surfer SEO alternatives and Clearscope alternatives pages cover the wider field.
How to Decide This Week
- Write down the next ten pages you'll publish. If you can't name them, you have a planning problem first.
- If you can name them and someone is writing, trial the optimizer that fits your team size: Surfer for one or two people, Clearscope for a larger writing team.
- Run the trial on new pages, not pages that already rank.
- After 4 to 8 weeks, judge by Search Console impressions and clicks, not by the in-editor grade.
